KEY QUESTIONS for carriages by sea

  • «What are we carrying?» Sea freight rates are defined depending on goods accessory to this or that group. For example, rates on transportation of coffee from the South America are much more below, than the rates on any other cargoes.
  • «What is the character of cargo?» In order to carry out transportation, it is necessary to know if your cargo is dangerous or if it demands observance of a certain temperature mode. The character of cargo depends not only on the container selection, but also on the route selection: some ports do not accept certain kinds of cargoes, and it is necessary to find other routes.
  • «How much does your cargo weigh?» Cargo weight is the major factor influencing all logistical chain: cargo delivery to port, loading to a warehouse, sea vessel; influencing container and carrier selection, selection of port, into which the cargo may come, and so on. Our experts may help you to prevent the unexpected difficulties connected with influence of the weight of cargo.
  • «Delivery charges» Unfortunately, there is no general base of the prices for transportation simply «from any port of China» or «somewhere from East coast USA». Transportation costs are effected by many factors, such as: the tariff for the freight, changing of the prices for oil, consignment release, changing of exchange rates, extra charges for safety, and extra charges for a season, handling, etc. Mostly, the rates are calculated individually, if the necessary information on cargo is available.

BILL OF LADING

The Bill of lading is used for the carriages by sea according to The Hague rules containing the International convention on unification of conditions of bills of lading dated August, 25th, 1924, in case if any other state law is not applied. The concept of the Bill of lading, necessary data and terms of issuing are defined in the Code of trading navigation of Ukraine (the Law of Ukraine N 176/95-ÂÐ dated 1995.05.23).

The Bill of lading is the document issued by the Ship-owner for the Shipper as a witness of cargo acceptance for the transportation.

The Bill of lading carries out three basic functions: certifies cargo acceptance for the transportation; is a shipping document; testifies the conclusion of the contract on the transportation, under which the Carrier undertakes to deliver cargo against granting of the documents. The Bill of lading should contain the notification of the navigable company: «cargo onboard», or «cargo is shipped onboard», or «cargo is accepted for shipment».

The Bill of lading contains: name of a vessel and its owner, tonnage of the vessel, name of the ports of loading and unloading, the freight cost, with details, where the freight payment should be made (in the port of loading or in the port of destination), number of the issued copies of the Bill of lading.

There are following types of the Bills of lading:

  • Straight bill of lading – is issued, when the goods should be delivered to the certain Consignee, the details with his/her name and address should be made;
  • Order bill of lading – is issued, when the Shipper may transfer his/her rights to the third party, having put on the reverse side his/her signature and stamp;
  • Bearer bill of lading – is issued, when the goods are transferred to any person: to the holder of the bill of lading.
